Estudiantes de Tucumán is an Argentine sports club based in San Juan Bautista, Greater San Juan, San Juan. The club is mostly known for its football team, which currently plays in the Primera B Metropolitana, the third division of Argentine football league system.
Estudiantes began its history in 1902 when a group of students from the Colegio San Agustín decided to establish a football team. The club was formally established on March 15, 1903, and its first match was played on April 5, 1903, against Universitario de Tucumán, which Estudiantes won 3-0.
Estudiantes quickly rose through the local football leagues, and in 1913, it joined the Argentine Primera División, the first division of Argentine football. The club played in the Primera División for six years, until it was relegated to the Primera B Metropolitana in 1919.
Estudiantes spent the next 12 years in the Primera B Metropolitana, until it was promoted back to the Primera División in 1931. The club played in the Primera División for five years, until it was relegated to the Primera B Metropolitana again in 1936.
Estudiantes spent the next 45 years in the Primera B Metropolitana, until it was promoted back to the Primera División in 1981. The club played in the Primera División for seven years, until it was relegated to the Primera B Metropolitana again in 1988.
Estudiantes has played in the Primera B Metropolitana ever since. The club has won the Primera B Metropolitana five times, in 1931, 1935, 1942, 1943, and 2016. The club has also won the Copa de la República three times, in 1968, 1975, and 1985.
Estudiantes is one of the most successful football teams in the Primera B Metropolitana. The club has won more Primera B Metropolitana championships than any other club. Estudiantes is also one of the few teams to have won the Copa de la República more than once.
